An area with an unexpected concentration of both natural and cultural factors. Two very different mountain ranges: the rough and rocky Apuan Alps and the more gentle and slightly higher Appenines. Six protected areas, small and pictoresque hamlets in extended chestnut woods, history you constantly walk into as being part of the local landscape and habits. But also a well-kept web of ancient mule tracks, the marble-linked material culture and the simple but genuine hospitality only hard working people develop. Wiews in this upper corner of Tuscany are indeed quite different from the ones you might have experienced in places like the Chianti, Florence, Siena or the Maremma. Yet is the coastal strip of Lucca (named Versilia) well-served by trains and busses so both the famous "5Terre" and Florence are within easy reach. The lively medieval twin-towns of Pietrasanta and Camaiore and their cosy surroundings are a perfect base for your active (or lazy) holiday...

What do you need a guide for?

You will take more out of your stay if accompanied by a local, that goes without saying. Guides are specifically trained to deliver professional assistence and will handle every aspect of it. They are familiar with the area and updated on its conditions. Local guides have, per definition, more cultural tools and general flexibility to match the group's needs and expectations than any foreign "tour-leader" or route description will ever have. Guides often make the difference between watching at and seeing things.

In Tuscany the job is regulated by Law 42/2000. We are freelancers who may cooperate with protected areas, schools, travel agencies etc. An Italian guide should be able to produce a licence card issued by the competent Comune. Please do ask for it.
